Job descriptions often say “Elementor expert” or “no page builders”. Production work is less ideological. I use Elementor Pro when the marketing team must land new pages without a ticket. I use a custom theme when the design system, performance budget, or WooCommerce flow cannot survive a builder’s markup.
I pick Elementor Pro when
- The brand will launch many landing pages
- Editors are not developers
- The layout is marketing-led, not app-led
- We agree on a component library so every page does not become a unique snowflake
I pick a custom theme when
- WooCommerce templates need precise checkout and archive behaviour
- Core Web Vitals are already failing under builder bloat
- The site is a long-term product with a design system
- Multiple developers will maintain the code
What interviewers should hear
A senior developer can explain the trade-off and show live examples of both. In my portfolio, institute and travel sites often use Elementor because the client’s team edits them. Custom PHP shows up where the business logic is not a section widget.
If you are hiring in Kolkata, ask for one Elementor site and one custom theme, plus what I would rebuild if we had another month. That conversation tells you more than a skill-bar graphic.
